Notes Many people make New Year’s resolutions.  Since this is a “new year,” what resolutions might parents of students make?  Here are a few suggestions.  “I’m going to stay out of the homework business unless my child asks for help”.  You may decide not to drive back home to fetch that forgotten assignment.  Maybe natural consequences will be the teacher.  Some experts state that letting your child “fall” is better than not letting them fall.  Someday everyone falls anyway.  Teach them how to fall and how to learn from it.  How many afterschool activities will you let your child participate?  Most experts say one is enough.  Let them go outside and play.  I'm not going to expect my child to excel, or even be good, at everything”.  What are your new resolutions?

Medical Forms
Medical forms are now due in the office.  If you are in kindergarten or 7th grade, that means you are due for at least one new shot.  Any other student whose did not receive any new shots since last year, does not have to turn in a medical form.
Epistle News
The Principal’s Epistle will always be published on Wednesdays that school is in session.  The first two weeks, everyone will receive a hard copy.  If you wish a hard copy starting in September, please notify the office.  Otherwise, the Epistle will be emailed, made available on my blog, and accessible on our school’s web page.

Box Tops for Education
Welcome back to school!  I pray that all of our students will have a wonderful God Blessed School Year!  Once again we are collecting Box Top$ for Education.  Clip and send your Box Top$ to school with your child(ren) each week and have your child place the Box Top$ in their classroom collection bag or container.  Each Wednesday when I am at the school, I will collect them and take care of sending them in before each deadline.  Our first deadline will be Sept. 23rd.
With this first collection we are going to have a contest to see which classroom can collect the most Box Top$ per student.  That classroom will receive a special treat.  Our winners last year were the 7th & 8th grade room and the Two Year classroom.  I hope they all enjoyed their ice cream treat.
A list of the products that you will find Box Top$ on will be by the school entrance and in the Church Narthex area. Watch for BONUS points on your grocery receipt and in the newspaper when they have special promotions.  Be sure to ask grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles, and friends to save their Box Top$ for you and St. Mark’s Lutheran School.  It is helpful if you would trim the Box Tops on the designated line around the Box Top$.  Gil and Judi Schepmann, coordinators.
Runner’s Club
Runner’s Club will include any student in grades 1-8.  Runners and walkers will meet under the pavilion by 3:30.  After doing a few stretching exercises, we will run and/or walk laps.  Each participant will count their laps completed and record that number on a chart.  Rewards will be given upon reaching 40 laps, 80 laps, and 120 laps.  Adults are invited to participate.
Pizza and Milk
Pizza is available on Fridays with two options. 1) Pay $47 per student for the year for one kind of pizza.  2) pay $2 per Friday you wish to have pizza.  Parents are invited to eat with us on any or all Fridays.  Milk also has two options.  1) Pay $25 per student for as much milk as the student wishes to drink – including extended care.  2) Pay $2 for a milk card that allows a student to drink 10 milks any time or day.
Lunch Room Helpers Needed
Over the last 3 years St. Mark’s has been able to offer a hot lunch as an option for students.  Helpers are needed to make this happen smoothly again this year.  If one or two could volunteer to help on Wednesdays, it would be much appreciated.
Happy Birthday

Classroom information
Mrs. Sherman (K)
The Kindergarteners are making new friends and settling into the classroom routines.  At Bible time, the class will explore the Bible and begin in the beginning with the account of God's creation.  In the morning, the boys and girls will name letters, sort letters using alphabet fruit snacks (yum!), recite nursery rhymes and create a book, "The Color Farm", during reading. They will compare lengths, graph the number of letters in their names and countdown to zero at math time.  In the afternoon, the class continues to count to 10 in Spanish and learn color words.  They will complete several activities with the letters in their names, make pattern block pictures and number towers.  They will also make a letter coconut tree after reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
Our first full week of school taught us about creation, the fall into sin, and Cain and Abel.  That is a lot to cover in a week, so we got started our first days of school.  STAR reading tests were administered to those children showing signs of readiness.  The others will take the test within the next few weeks as they become ready for the Accelerated Reading program.  In math, the children worked with number lines and learned the math station rotation.  We are very pleased to welcome Mr. Schepmann and Mr. McMasters as helpers in our classroom.   The children also started literacy centers.  OSMO seems to be everyone's favorite center at this time.  In science, we are learning about skunks and other mammals of the woods.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
This is our first full week of school which is quite exciting.  In reading this week we read “Henry and Mudge” and focused the sequence of events in a story.  We also worked on locating our short vowel sounds.  In art we learned about primary and secondary colors while making a color wheel umbrella.  For math we are familiarizing ourselves with counting money, number lines, and analog clocks.  Overall second grade has proven to be exciting.  7th and 8th grade science - This week we dove right into levels of body organization and organ systems.  As part of the chapter project, students are engineering a prosthetic hand out.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
For the first full week of school we eased into doing all the classes.  In religion we began with the account of the 3 men in the furnace and talked about how that relates to the Savior.  In grammar we worked with prepositions: learning them in song, doing activities, and playing preposition Bingo.  In science we began researching bees and will be writing paragraphs about them.  We will be learning about states and regions of the U.S. this year in social studies.  This week we learned about Maine and New Hampshire.  In math, the 3rd graders reviewed numbers, number grids, math tools, and graphs.   The 4th graders worked with points, lines, segments, rays, angles, and polygons.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we looked at the creation and the fall with an emphasis on sin and a Savior, drowning in sin and drowning in mercy.  In 5th grade math we worked with factors and multiplication.  In 6th grade math we worked on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers and money. We also worked with the order of operations. In our Language Arts time we worked on the setting of our first book, Summer of the Monkeys. We also took some character notes. In Social Studies we reviewed geography basics. In Science we reviewed what science is and how it does confirm the Bible. We also worked on worm bin observations and bluebird data sheets. In Spelling we worked through our first lesson with a theme from Proverbs 17:17.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
In History we’re learning about the different cultures that developed in different areas of the Americas.  We’re also learning about the sophisticated cultures of Western Africa.  We know these two cultures are going to change greatly as Europeans enter the mix.  We’re reading a story about a girl from a place that was part of the Soviet Union, before it broke up, in 1989.  There are so many things we take for granted here in our blessed country, including our ability to learn about God, and mention His name in every class.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying God’s amazing grace.  In 7th grade math the students are solving equations and being introduced to sequences.   In 8th grade math we are solving word problems and converting measures.  The students are building a buoyant structure in STEM.

Saint Salute
A big Saint Salute and thanks to David Galenski and Ryan Carter for making our floors so shiny and bright with fresh wax.
A big Saint Salute and thanks to Mike Woeste and Eb Ax and many other volunteers who helped cut, clear, and stack the wood from the 5 dead trees on our grounds.
Notes
Welcome to a new school year.  Our theme this year is Bee-Attitudes.  Based on Matthew 5 and many other verses in God’s Word, St. Mark’s will do attitude checks throughout the year.  Join us in modeling God’s attitude towards us.
One item that St. Mark’s failed on last year and we need to improve this year is the number of vacation days missed during the year.  We were below the 95% attendance for the first time in the history of the school.  Let’s work on changing that for the good.

Classroom information
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Welcome back to school!  A short, two day week is a great to transition to Kindergarten.  The boys and girls are exploring their room and settling in to their new school routines.  They are learning the classroom rules and making new friends. The boys and girls created a bee for the theme Bee-Attitudes.  Senor Rana (Mr. Frog) is helping the full day students to say hello and goodbye and count to 10 in Spanish.  The boys and girls will also go on a letter hunt!
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
Here we go!  We started our new school year with opening chapel.  The children learned a few rules and procedures and looked forward to lunch and recess.  We read a story about a boy named Jack and his talents.  The children started their review of sounds and letter formation.  We learned about literacy centers and how to use them as well as math stations.  For a short week it was full of learning and fun.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
This week the students will be learning new routines and new information about their new teacher.  We will also start our AR reading along with our first math lesson of the year.  The students will be working on their observation skills in science.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
Starting a new school year is always exciting.  The 4th graders welcomed the 3rd graders and will help them in the next weeks to get to know the games in the centers.  The first days were spent sorting supplies, organizing desks, developing classroom rules, and practicing procedures.  Along with those things, we did some cooperative activities and review games to help us ease into the school year.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
As we welcomed the students to a new year we spent the first two days going over classroom rules and procedures. Our focus was on our theme “Bee Attitudes.” In our Bible time we learned expectations of the Bible Journal and memory work for the year. In math we worked on different strategies for problem solving. Other time was spent working on Bluebird house, worm bin, flower garden care, and other procedures that we will use throughout the entire school year.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
We have begun the process of letting 7&8th graders know that summer vacation is but a dream, lost in the mists of time.  They’ve hit the big time, now, and are the students to which every other student looks up.  I just KNOW they’re going to be the best class in the school!  We’re starting U.S. History with the civilizations which inhabited North America before Europeans arrived.  I compare the Native Americans’ situation to someone driving merrily down a highway, not knowing there is a 40-mile traffic jam awaiting him in 5 miles.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying God’s amazing grace.  In 7th grade math the students are reviewing whole numbers and evaluating expressions.   In 8th grade math we are studying integers and the order of operations.  The students are building a buoyant structure in STEM.
