Notes
Four weeks ago a visitation team for
accreditation was at St. Mark’s for 3 days.
Here are some of their suggestions for improvement (not in any
particular order):
ü
Post the mission statement in each classroom.
ü
Find ways for the staff to be involved in community activities
outside of St. Mark’s ministries.
ü
One service project each year to serve the community in a one mile
radius around the school.
ü
Create one or more parent groups that provide support for one
another and the school. (Tuesday morning
prayer group, Bible study, PTL, PTO)
ü
Provide an annual budget line item for marketing and
publicity.
ü
Adopt a parent due process policy and publish the policies in the
teacher and parent handbooks.
ü
Perform an annual review of the administrator.
ü Develop a plan to annual
review the effectiveness of the school to assist in creating short and long
term goals.
Important Dates to Know
29 School Musical “Are we there Yet?” 2PM & 7PM
May 2-6 Achievement testing
3 Band Concert at 6:30, Family Fun Night 7PM
The Box Top$ Race is
on!!!
Kindergarten is in the lead with over 19 Box Top$ per child. Grades 3 & 4
are following them with 4 Box Top$ per child. Keep those Box Top$ coming in for
your class. An interest story that was shared with the Kindergarten collection
about a
Box Top - "This Box Top was well
earned! We visited a firehouse and my son spotted it on a cereal box in the
kitchen and told the fireman he could donate it to St. Mark's! So the fireman
cut it out of the box on the spot and handed it to my son." Neat story!
Now don't run over to your local fire station and ask for their Box Top$ but
see how easy it is to ask friends and family to save those Box Top$ for school.
Have fun collecting. Contest ends May 18th.
Judi and Gil Schepmann, coordinators.
Band Concert Tuesday, May 3rd!
We will share
our band accomplishments this year with a concert on Tuesday, May 3 at 6:30
pm. Following the concert there will be refreshments and the family
game night. Please invite grandparents, family, and friends to support
the band students. In addition, those 4th grade students
interested in participating in band for next school year will have an
opportunity to try and be fitted for a band instrument following the concert.
Tuition for May
All tuition payments must be paid by
May 10. Students will not be allowed to
attend after May 10 unless payment in full has been made. 8th graders will not be allowed to
attend graduation unless tuition is paid in full. This does not apply to those families on
auto-deduct.
Achievement Testing
St. Mark’s will not be taking the
PARCC like last year. The students in
grades 1-8 will be taking the Terra Nova achievement tests May 2-6. This is an
updated test similar to the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Parents will receive a summary copy when the
results are known.
Yearbooks for Sale
Yearbooks
for 15-16 are on sale for $12 each. You
will have at least 48 color pages of wonderful and memorable pictures. To order send a check made to St.
Mark’s. Since we are using a different
company this year, no special options are available (like name on front,
personal note, etc.). Order forms have
been distributed and are also available in the hallway.
Yearbook pictures needed
Any and
all pictures for the yearbook can be sent to stmarksmilfordphotos@gmail.com

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
Preschool is learning
letter G for garden. We will focus on the parts of a plant, what plants need to
grow, and which parts of plants we eat. Both classes will create flower
diagrams and plant their own seeds to take home. In Bible Time 3’s will hear
the account of Peter and John healing a crippled man. 4’s will hear how God
answers prayers as Peter is released from prison.
Mrs.
Reynolds (PK & P-2)
Pre-K is learning about rainbows this week as
we study the letter R. We will practice sorting by color and mix
paint colors together to make new colors. We will be doing a couple
experiments with food coloring this week. One with celery watching what happens
when we leave celery in food colored water. The other experiment will be with
food coloring and paper towels we will watch the colors fade together through a
chain of paper towels. In Bible we are learning about the apostle Peter and his
sermon. Pre-2 is looking at butterflies
this week! We have chrysalis in our classroom we will look at. We are reading
"Ten little Caterpillars" and making a butterfly craft. We
will be talking about transformation as we look at the caterpillars and also in
our Bible lesson for the week. We are reading the story of Paul and how he
transformed and became a friend of Jesus.
Mrs.
Sherman (K)
Such a great week of learning in
Kindergarten! At Bible time, the class gets to hear the account of
Pentecost and of the power of the Holy Spirit! Then, they begin a study of
tropical rainforests. Over the next several weeks, the class will be involved
in discovering facts about the rainforest and its inhabitants, reading
informational and fictional text and so much more. The boys and girls
will also create a classroom rainforest area. During math, the class will
tell time to the half hour and use function machines. The afternoon students
enjoy spring and rainforest themed literacy and math centers. They will
also survey another class to see if the class thinks snakes are cool or creepy.
Mrs.
Reisenbichler (1)
The parables of Jesus were our topic
in Jesus Time this week. We studied the Rich Fool and the Lost
Sheep. Our final musical practices took a little extra time, but it is
time well spent. Next week is achievement testing, so we spent this week
reviewing and using our skills. We started our final artist/writer's
workshop book this week. It is a science based story based around the
animal we learned about when making our dioramas. We also are nearing the
end of our Native American studies. The children have learned that not
all Native Americans are alike and live in different types of housing, wear
different types of clothing, and had different customs.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion
we studied the account of Peter and John healing the lame man by the
temple. In reading we read several fables and tall tales and discussed
the characteristics of each. Idaho and Colorado were the states we
studied this week. In science we learned about the different body
systems. In math the 3rd graders worked on dividing and learned how to do
lattice multiplication. The 4th graders worked on percents.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In
our Bible time this week we looked at Solomon building the temple. We also
practiced for the musical. In 5th grade math we worked with the
volume of cylinders, pyramids, and cones.
In 6th grade math we worked on graphing functions,
transversals, measures of angles, and percent equivalents. In our Language Arts
time we finished reading Which Way
Freedom? In Social Studies we continued to study South America. In Science
we continued our look at “Living Resources.”
We continued to monitor our bluebird houses.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
In Literature
we’re comparing points of view. We’ve
read several articles on why the driving and drinking ages should be raised,
lowered, or left the same. I was
surprised at how many students’ opinions were that the drinking and driving
ages should be raised! It’s responsible
thinking, but not very popular with their peers, I’d guess. In History, we’re learning about the Monroe
Doctrine and the U.S. outlook as a new power.
We’re also going to study the Nationalism and Sectionalism that tended
to develop.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are discussing living
with suffering. In 7th grade
math the students are solving distance/rate word problems and quadratic
equations. In 8th grade math,
the class is calculating surface area and volume of complex 3D shapes and
studying the scale factor of other 3D shaes.
The students are constructing a key ring using a CAD program on the
computer and them printing it on a 3D printer in STEM.
