Notes
Welcome to the preschool families.  St. Mark’s Lutheran School is looking forward to serving your family with love, kindness, and forgiveness through Christ.  If ever you have a questions, comment, or concern, please feel free to address it to me, a teacher, or Mrs. Cartheuser, our secretary.
One privilege that we have at our school is to worship together.  The morning classes (except for Pre-3’s) meet every Wednesday at 9:15 AM.  Parents are welcome to join us.  The afternoon classes meet on the first Wednesday (except this month it is on Sept. 10) at 1PM.  The preschool class is dismissed after their special lesson in the morning worship service.

Important Dates to Know
3 Preschool classes start
6 Funeral for retired pastor Dierks at noon
17 Market Day 11:30 AM
Forms Due
The Emergency, Photo, Pickup, Doctor’s permission, and Medical Record forms are due.  The state requires us to have these forms. They may be placed in the red basket in the school hall, brought to the office, or given to me.
Preschool Drop Off-Pick Up Procedures
No student may enter the school before 8:55AM unless they are going to extended care.  The morning classes end at 11:30AM.  Late pickup fees apply after 11:35AM.  The afternoon classes may enter the building after 12:25 for 3’s and 4’s and after 12:35 for PK.  Afternoon classes dismiss at 3:00 PM except for PK that dismisses at 3:10.
Market Day
St. Mark’s has chosen a monthly fundraiser call Market Day.  They allow supporters to purchase high quality food products.  A percent is earned by our school.  An order form is attached to this Epistle.  Please ask a teacher or me if you have any questions.  Ordering online is very easy.
Dress Down Day for K-8
St. Mark’s usually has one dress down day per month.  Students in Kind. to grade 8 may pay $1 to dress down on Friday, September 12.  Please give your money to your teacher.  Students do not have to dress down on this day – it is optional.  No unchristian words, logos, or pictures are permitted on these days.
Additional Extended Care Worker Needed
St. Mark’s has had such an increase in applications for extended care that another supervisor is needed most days starting at 3PM until 6PM.  Please contact the office if interested.  If you know of someone needing some extra hours, please contact us.
AR (Accelerated Reader)
St. Mark’s pays a large fee for each student to have access to this site.  It supports our reading curriculum while allowing each student to read books on their exact reading level.  Parents may have access to their child(ren)’s records by having their own log in.  This can be requested through the office.  Many students moved up in their point club on the AR Wall of Fame.  Look in the school main hallway for your child’s name.  Quizzes can only be taken during the week at school.
School Tuition
Parents are reminded that tuition is now due for the year.  If possible you can fill out a form that allows us to deduct that fee from your account of choosing on the days that you specify.  It can be deducted once or twice a month.  If you used this method last year, you need to complete a new form for this year.  The first payment is due this month for preschool families.

Classroom information
Mrs. Schulte (Pre-2)
In our Preschool 2 class we welcomed the children and “hopped” right into the first day of Preschool.  A lot of our time was spent helping them get used to their school, classroom, teachers, and friends.  We also spent a lot of time learning our routines during Welcome, Table, Circle, Bible, Center, Story, Bathroom, Snack, and Outdoor times.  We started the day at Circle Time introducing the MYSTERY BAG (what could be in there?), hopping around like a fog (fast, slow, high, low), and learning our Hello Song together.  Along with apple slices, we shared a favorite snack of frogs…flies (yummy raisins)!  We read the story FIVE SPECKLED FROGS at Story Time.  At Bible Time we read from Genesis 1:1 and began our Creation Books.  And when we went outside to our fun playground, we helped plant mums in our flower box.
Mrs. Frey (Pre-3,4)
Preschool is very excited to get started this week! Our theme will be All About Me as we share more about ourselves to get to know each other. 4’s will create a name collage and make an “Eye See” graph of eye color. 3’s will focus on the color red and make “Paint Blots.” During Bible Time both groups will learn the creation story and how we are God’s favorite creation!
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Kindergarten continues to learn about God's wonderful creation.  The class will sing, worship, pray, praise and seek the truth in God's Word as they hear about Adam and Eve enjoying time in the Garden of Eden with God.  The boys and girls will begin reading workshop and participate in small group literacy activities.  They will learn the letters Mm and Nn and sort pictures by the beginning sounds /m/ and /n/.  During math, Kindergarten continues "getting to know numbers" and sorting by attributes.  At science time, they will create a chart, "What is science?".  The full day Kindergarten students, will learn a color song in Spanish, sort by length and create number charts in math.  They will also read and complete an emergent reader called "Rainbow Hair".
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1-2)
This week the children learned about God' promise to Abram and the fulfillment of that promise in the birth of Isaac.  In math, first graders are working on number sense in counting forward and back while the second graders are working on making tens.  Turtles are the topic in science this week.  We made concept maps recording information we learned about turtles, and worked on our science vocabulary.  first graders had fun with Humpty Dumpty this week.  We did a few egg experiments with raw eggs and hard boiled eggs.  Second graders worked with nouns and verb, and learned about collective nouns.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion, we studied the account of Cain and Abel and talked about how well God knows us.  In grammar we worked on prepositions, which we will be working on for several weeks.  In reading, we continued to work on our reading notebooks and tried to catch up on the items we didn't get to last week - recounting stories, idioms, and part of characteristics of stories.  In social studies we learned about Ohio's physical features and some of its natural resources.  In science we talked about the tools used in science.  We then tried to make our own compass out of a needle and a magnet.  In math, the 3rd graders worked on equivalent names, chance events, calculator routines, and finding differences.  The 4th graders began using compasses to construct circles, hexagons, and triangles.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we looked at the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod with a special look at our cross. In 5th grade math we worked with divisibility, prime and composite numbers. In 6th grade math we reviewed fractional parts, perimeter, line segments, rays, perimeter, and the number line.  In our Language Arts time we continued to build our vocabulary, as well as began a new story called “The Good Deed.”. In Social Studies the topic was Africa’s physical geography. In Science we began to answer the question: “What is Life?” We looked at classifying living things and how this is useful in more than just Science. In Spelling we studied words with the prefixes re-, un-, dis, mis-.
Mr. Mayo (7-8)
As we continue to delve into the Civil War, we’ve come upon the battle of Antietam.   Many people know of this bloody battle.  Some of the students were surprised to learn that more Americans died in that 3-day battle than in the previous 3 WARS in which our nation fought!
We’re reading Animal Farm, which many students don’t get a chance to read until high school.  The students are enjoying the book, and enjoying the discussions about those who seek power and for what reasons, even more.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we will study what God’s Word says about school struggles – especially grades and cheating.  In 7th math we will work with fractions and percents.  In 8th math we will study prime numbers, rational numbers, and equivalent fractions.  In science we are looking at all the organelles in a cell.
