Thoughts
More on the topic of conversations between teens and adults.  Teens will often avoid these conversations while parents may be left frustrated by the lack of communication.  Here are a few suggestions that you can ask to get things started.
Ask about what family members do for them that help them out the most
Ask them to name a past accomplishment that they’re proud of, as well as something they would like to accomplish in the future
Ask them about where they would go on vacation if they could choose anywhere in the world for a free trip.
Ask about their favorite sites on the Internet, and what they enjoy about visiting those websites.
Ask them to describe one thing that God has been teaching them lately, and how that is changing their lives.
Ask them about the best dream and worst nightmare they can remember.
Ask them to describe something funny that always makes them laugh.
Ask if they could break one bad habit, what habit they would change, and why
Ask their opinion of the biggest misconception people have about teenagers
Ask them what one question they would most like to ask God, and why.
Everyone is receiving a hard copy of the Epistle this week.  If you are not receiving the Epistle via email or if you wish a hard copy every week. Please contact the office or let me know at rreisenb@hotmail.com

The students who received coupons from the Walk-a-thon will be able to use them on Monday, November 23 for lunch with the principal (leave at 11:50 AM) and on Tuesday, Nov. 24 for stringing the principal and popping a water balloon over a staff member’s head (12:30 PM).
Student Council Needs Your Help
The second quarter is well underway, and Student Council is already planning for Christmas.  In an effort to decorate the school sufficiently this year, Student Council is asking for donations of decorations.  We are looking especially for Christmas lights, ornaments, garland, etc.  Donations must be brought in by December 2 and can be dropped off in the marked cardboard box inside the school entrance.
Naked Turkey Contest
Our school will be dong a fundraiser called the “Naked Turkey”.  Each class has a turkey.  You can buy a feather for your classes’ turkey for $0.25.  The class with the most feathers at the end gets a prize.  You can purchase a feather before or after school November 16-19.  The funds will be used to purchase an outdoor basketball and pay for the striping.
Box Top$ for Education
Keep turning in the Box Top$.  We had a good submission last week.  Please be sure to check the expiration date to make sure they have not expired.  Also, thank you to everyone who did a great job of trimming the Box Top$.  Every little bit helps!  Remember the contest ends December 16th.
Photos needed for yearbook
Your phots are needed by the yearbook staff to help make this year’s yearbook the best possible.  To help parents pass these photos that they take all the time at school, a special email account has been established to gather pictures only.  Staff and parents are invited and encouraged to attach great pictures to an email and send it to stmarksmilfordphotos@gmail.com.  Thanks for your help.

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
Preschool will learn about letter B for boats this week. We will create Mayflower pictures, conduct sink or float tests, and list different types of boats. 3’s will enjoy exploring buoyancy in the water table. 4’s will create aluminum foil boats and test their strength by counting the number of pennies that the boat can sustain. During Bible Time both classes will rehearse for our Christmas program on December 15! We have already had some good discussions on Bethlehem, Jesus’ birth, and why He came to Earth--to be our Savior!
Mrs. Reynolds (PK & P-2)
This week Pre-2 is continuing the theme of Family. We will be looking at family photos and identifying who is in our family. We will also be naming things we like to do with our families. We are continuing our alphabet books this week with F and G. This weeks Bible lesson is a review of the flood. In Pre-K we are learning the letter T and talking about Thanksgiving. Since T is for turkey we are having a lot of fun with turkey activities! We will be drawing a picture of what we think we will be eating on thanksgiving and food that we are thankful for. We will be creating play-doh turkeys during our morning table time complete with feathers and googly eyes. We will be making a turkey and adding the letters to spell our name on the feather and counting how many letters are in our names. For our Bible time we will be continuing our practice of the Christmas program and everyday telling God things that we are thankful for.
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Kindergarten continues to learn about Pilgrims, Native Americans and the first Thanksgiving.  They are comparing and contrasting life during the time of the Pilgrims and now.  They are surprised to learn how many chores the Pilgrim children had to do!  During Bible time, the class will hear about Joshua, the battle of Jericho and how God is always in control.  The literacy theme for the week focuses on what can be made from various shapes.  The class will name adjectives for size and shape and summarize stories.  At math time, they will solve turkey number stories, order tricky teens and show various ways to make 7.  The full day students are practicing for their upcoming presentation of "Hurray For Thanksgiving."  They are completing a Thanksgiving pattern book and playing Thanksgiving Bump in math.  They will listen to Thanksgiving Surprise, describe characters and make a story map.
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
This week we learned about Jehoshaphat and Esther in Jesus Time.  These people are models of faith in difficult times.  The children finished up learning about bears in science and started a STEM project.  In spelling, we worked with long vowel words using Mr. Sneaky E.  The children made puppets to help us remember the e rule.  The children had a math assessment this week on using money, addition skills, and time.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion we'll be studying the accounts of Jesus feeding the crowd and Jesus walking on the water.  We're finishing The Tiger Rising this week and will be taking a test on it.  In grammar we'll work on verb tenses and subject/verb agreement.  In social studies we'll be learning about Indiana and Illinois.  In science we'll learn about things that shape the earth, like its layers, plates, and erosion.  We'll also do several models to demonstrate plates and erosion.  In math the 3rd graders will work on multiplication, work with map scales, and do a coin toss experiment.  The 4th graders begin the week with a chapter test and then will begin a chapter on multiplication.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we prepared for our chapel play on Wednesday. We also studied the relationship between Jethro and Moses. In 5th grade math we continued to work with fractions. In 6th grade math we took our 7th test, worked with data, fractions, and percents. In our Language Arts time we continued reading The Face in the Besseldorf Funeral Parlor. We worked with new vocabulary and began a paper on our favorite pet. In Social Studies we presented our state power points as well as learned the countries of North America. In Science we continued our work with technological systems and design.  In Spelling we reviewed the words from lessons 7-11.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
We’re moving along in To Kill a Mockingbird.  The students are recognizing themes and finding some that I hadn’t thought of.  They’ve broken up into study groups to discuss the book during lunch, trying to divine what questions I might ask.  In History, we’re at the point where Parliament wants to tax the colonies to pay for the soldiers sent over here in the French and Indian War.  When we realized the British were also fighting the French in Europe, we’re a little more understanding than the colonists were.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying how God created the world.  In 7th grade math the students are adding and subtracting mixed numbers and working with unit multipliers.  In 8th grade math we are solving percent and rate problems.  The students are launching paper rockets in STEM.

Thoughts
Today, conversations between teens and adults can be awkward.  Teens will often avoid these conversations while parents may be left frustrated by the lack of communication.  For some of you, this is not true.  You have taught your child to tell you everything (well-almost everything).  You have established a wonderful parent-child relationship.  My hat is off to you.  However, more common is the first situation – little or no talking.  Here are a few suggestions that you can ask to get things started.
1)  Ask interesting questions that requires more than a one-word answer.
2)  Listen and notice
3)  Ask who they would text, if they could text anyone in the world right now and be guaranteed a response, and what they would ask that person.
4)  Ask what one world evil they would destroy if possible, and why.
5)  Ask why they chose the outfits they’re wearing right now.
6)  Ask what songs are on their current playlists, and why.
7)  Ask what their favorite phone app is and what it does.
More on this topic next week.

School closings or delays
St. Mark’s will communicate this message via email to each parent, Facebook, and TV (channel 9 only).  Also, if Milford is closed or delayed, then so is St. Mark’s.  Those that ride other busses to school must realize that if their district is closed, no transportation is available to St. Mark’s (if St. Mark’s is open).
Operation Christmas Child—Fill a Shoe Box
It’s Operation Christmas Child time! The Women’s Guild of St. Mark’s church invites all to participate in this mission. Operation Christmas Child is a program that allows us to provide Christmas presents to children in other countries who are affected by war, poverty, disease or disaster.  Here’s how it works: Grab a shoe box from under the Women’s Guild table near the Fellowship Hall. Choose either a box for a boy or girl.  Follow the directions in the attached flier which will tell you how to fill the box. FYI ~ No toothpaste, please. Write a check for $7 to “Samaritan’s Purse” to help cover the cost of shipping these gifts overseas. Place your check inside your filled box, put the rubber band back around the box, and make sure your boy/girl label is on the box with appropriate age range marked. Return the filled box to the Women’s Guild table by November 16. Thank you!
Happy Birthday

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
In November Preschool is focusing on transportation. This week’s theme is cars. Each child will bring a toy car to school, and we will practice sorting cars by color, shape, and size. We will also discuss the importance of transportation safety. 3’s will create tire track artwork and wash the dirty cars at the ‘car wash.’ 4’s will create letter C car artwork and paper plate cars. At Bible Time we will (already!) begin to practice our songs for the Christmas program.
Mrs. Reynolds (PK & P-2)
Pre-2 is continuing their theme on families. We will talk about how many people are in our families this week. We are learning about the first sin in the Bible, how thankful we are for God's forgiveness. We are continuing our alphabet books with the letter E and make our E's into elephants.
Pre-K is learning the letter B and talking about buses and boats. Our science experiment this week is finding out what floats and what sinks. We will make predictions on which things with float or sink then test our theory in our sensory table. We are working on a thankful tree for our bulletin board students are telling us what they are thankful for. We have begun practice for our Christmas program and the students are loving the songs. We are excited to continue that this week
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Kindergarten welcomed the 4 year preschool classes as they visited Kindergarten.  The boys and girls were excited to host and share their knowledge with the younger children.  The class began learning about Pilgrim children and how different life was long ago. At Bible time, they heard the account of the Israelites crossing the Jordan River and entering the Promised Land.  During reading, they read books about wheels, blended phonemes, named synonyms and identified words beginning with /p/.  At math time, they wrote numbers 1- 20, made a counting by 10's turkey and solved number stories. They also, made a craft to share with the veterans on Veteran's Day.  The full day students practiced for their Thanksgiving play to be presented to their families.  They wrote and blended CVC words, completed beginning sounds sorts and made a sight word turkey.  They also played partner math games, ordered turkeys by size and sorted and graphed turkey feathers.
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
David and Solomon are the two Biblical leaders we studied this week.  We learned that with God all things are possible.  The children are practicing for a performance of The Three Bears.  We will perform our reader's theater presentation to the kindergarten class the week of Thanksgiving.  We will work on prosody to make our performance the best possible.  Transportation was the theme of this week’s social studies lessons.  The children watched a video on transportation, learned a song, and completed worksheets based on this learning.  In science, we learned about bears.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
This week in second grade we finished reading about all kinds of vegetables.  We read about a girl and her mom growing Chinese vegetables, giant vegetables, and community gardens.  Since it was Veteran's Day we also learned a little bit about the armed forces and wrote thank you notes for the veterans that we would be eating lunch with on Veteran's Day.  In math we are starting to work on reading temperature while continuing to improve our money and clock reading skills.  We also started to learn about the Pilgrims and how they came over on the Mayflower.  Seventh and Eighth grade took a test on the nervous system.

Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion we'll be going over the accounts of Jesus' transfiguration and feeding the crowd. In reading, we're getting to the exciting part of The Tiger Rising.  We're getting really good at finding the similes as we read!   In grammar we'll learn the difference between some verbs that are easy to misuse.  In social studies we'll work on a map of the southeastern states and then learn about our own state, Ohio.  In science we'll continue to learn about force and motion and do some experiments.  In math, the 3rd graders will work on multiplication and division while the 4th graders work on measurements and convert metric measurements to decimals.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we looked at the power of prayer and the importance of praying for church leaders. We also prepared our chapel play on November 18th. In 5th grade math we began to work with fractions. In 6th grade math we worked with fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers. In our Language Arts time we began reading The Face in the Besseldorf Funeral Parlor. A humorous mystery. In Social Studies we began work on our next power point about a state in our country. In Science we worked with technological systems and design.  In Spelling we worked with word shapes, word search worksheets, dictation, and proofreading. We also took our 11th test!
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
We are learning about the French and Indian War.  We’ll also learn why England thought it fair to levy taxes on the colonies, due to the increased cost of fighting that war, in great measure, for the colonists’ benefit.  Now, we KNOW that the colonists didn’t think the same way, or we would all be speaking English.  Well, you know what I mean.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying how God created the world.  In 7th grade math the students are studying different options for writing quotients.  In 8th grade math we are solving ratio problems and studying the slope of functions.  The students are making edible cars in STEM.
