Thoughts
More on the topic of conversations
between teens and adults. Teens will
often avoid these conversations while parents may be left frustrated by the
lack of communication. Here are a few
suggestions that you can ask to get things started.
Ask them to name a past
accomplishment that they’re proud of, as well as something they would like to
accomplish in the future
Ask them about where they would
go on vacation if they could choose anywhere in the world for a free trip.
Ask about their favorite sites on
the Internet, and what they enjoy about visiting those websites.
Ask them to describe one thing
that God has been teaching them lately, and how that is changing their lives.
Ask them about the best dream and
worst nightmare they can remember.
Ask them to describe something
funny that always makes them laugh.
Ask if they could break one bad
habit, what habit they would change, and why
Ask their opinion of the biggest
misconception people have about teenagers
Ask them what one question they
would most like to ask God, and why.

Family Fun Night
Friday,
November 20, the Family Ministries team invites all families to come to an
Advent preparation Family Fun Night. A
potluck (bring a dish to share) will begin at 6:15 PM followed by a devotion
and a family activity. This is a great
way to prepare our hearts for Christmas during the Advent season.
Walk-a-thon Rewards
The students who received coupons from
the Walk-a-thon will be able to use them on Monday, November 23 for lunch with
the principal (leave at 11:50 AM) and on Tuesday, Nov. 24 for stringing the
principal and popping a water balloon over a staff member’s head (12:30 PM).
Student Council Needs Your Help
The second quarter is well underway,
and Student Council is already planning for Christmas. In an effort to decorate the school
sufficiently this year, Student Council is asking for donations of
decorations. We are looking especially
for Christmas lights, ornaments, garland, etc.
Donations must be brought in by December 2 and can be dropped off in the
marked cardboard box inside the school entrance.
Naked Turkey Contest
Our school will be dong a fundraiser
called the “Naked Turkey”. Each class
has a turkey. You can buy a feather for
your classes’ turkey for $0.25. The
class with the most feathers at the end gets a prize. You can purchase a feather before or after
school November 16-19. The funds will be
used to purchase an outdoor basketball and pay for the striping.
Box Top$ for Education
Keep turning in the Box Top$. We had a good submission last week. Please be sure to check the expiration date
to make sure they have not expired.
Also, thank you to everyone who did a great job of trimming the Box
Top$. Every little bit helps! Remember the contest ends December 16th.

Classroom information

Preschool
will learn about letter B for boats this week. We will create Mayflower
pictures, conduct sink or float tests, and list different types of boats. 3’s
will enjoy exploring buoyancy in the water table. 4’s will create aluminum foil
boats and test their strength by counting the number of pennies that the boat
can sustain. During Bible Time both classes will rehearse for our Christmas
program on December 15! We have already had some good discussions on Bethlehem,
Jesus’ birth, and why He came to Earth--to be our Savior!

This week Pre-2 is continuing the theme of
Family. We will be looking at family photos and identifying who is in our
family. We will also be naming things we like to do with our families. We are
continuing our alphabet books this week with F and G. This weeks Bible lesson
is a review of the flood. In Pre-K we are learning the letter T and talking
about Thanksgiving. Since T is for turkey we are having a lot of fun with
turkey activities! We will be drawing a picture of what we think we will
be eating on thanksgiving and food that we are thankful for. We will be
creating play-doh turkeys during our morning table time complete with feathers
and googly eyes. We will be making a turkey and adding the letters to spell our
name on the feather and counting how many letters are in our names. For our
Bible time we will be continuing our practice of the Christmas program and
everyday telling God things that we are thankful for.

Kindergarten
continues to learn about Pilgrims, Native Americans and the first
Thanksgiving. They are comparing and contrasting life during the time of
the Pilgrims and now. They are surprised to learn how many chores the
Pilgrim children had to do! During Bible time, the class will hear about
Joshua, the battle of Jericho and how God is always in control. The
literacy theme for the week focuses on what can be made from various
shapes. The class will name adjectives for size and shape and summarize
stories. At math time, they will solve turkey number stories, order
tricky teens and show various ways to make 7. The full day students are
practicing for their upcoming presentation of "Hurray For
Thanksgiving." They are completing a Thanksgiving pattern book and
playing Thanksgiving Bump in math. They will listen to Thanksgiving
Surprise, describe characters and make a story map.

This week we learned about Jehoshaphat
and Esther in Jesus Time. These people are models of faith in difficult
times. The children finished up learning about bears in science and
started a STEM project. In spelling, we worked with long vowel words
using Mr. Sneaky E. The children made puppets to help us remember the e
rule. The children had a math assessment this week on using money,
addition skills, and time.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion we'll be studying the
accounts of Jesus feeding the crowd and Jesus walking on the water. We're
finishing The Tiger Rising this week and will be taking a test on
it. In grammar we'll work on verb tenses and subject/verb
agreement. In social studies we'll be learning about Indiana and
Illinois. In science we'll learn about things that shape the earth, like
its layers, plates, and erosion. We'll also do several models to
demonstrate plates and erosion. In math the 3rd graders will work on
multiplication, work with map scales, and do a coin toss experiment. The
4th graders begin the week with a chapter test and then will begin a chapter on
multiplication.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In
our Bible time this week we prepared for our chapel play on Wednesday. We also
studied the relationship between Jethro and Moses. In 5th grade math
we continued to work with fractions. In 6th grade math we took our 7th
test, worked with data, fractions, and percents. In our Language Arts time we
continued reading The Face in the Besseldorf
Funeral Parlor. We worked with new vocabulary and began a paper on our
favorite pet. In Social Studies we presented our state power points as well as
learned the countries of North America. In Science we continued our work with
technological systems and design. In
Spelling we reviewed the words from lessons 7-11.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
We’re
moving along in To Kill a Mockingbird. The students are recognizing themes and
finding some that I hadn’t thought of.
They’ve broken up into study groups to discuss the book during lunch,
trying to divine what questions I might ask.
In History, we’re at the point where Parliament wants to tax the
colonies to pay for the soldiers sent over here in the French and Indian War. When we realized the British were also
fighting the French in Europe, we’re a little more understanding than the
colonists were.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying how God
created the world. In 7th
grade math the students are adding and subtracting mixed numbers and working
with unit multipliers. In 8th
grade math we are solving percent and rate problems. The students are launching paper rockets in STEM.
