Thoughts

What is Advent?  The word 'Advent' is from the Latin 'Adventus,' which means 'coming.' Advent is the beginning of a new liturgical year (in the Western churches), and encompasses the span of time from the fourth Sunday before Christmas, until the Nativity of Our Lord is celebrated. The first Sunday of Advent will always fall somewhere between November 27th at the earliest and December 3rd at the latest. The liturgical color for this season is purple.  Like Lent, Advent is a preparatory season. It has significance because it is a season of looking forward and waiting for something greater; both for the annual celebration of the event of Christ's birth, and for the time when Christ will come again. It is observed so that Christians are able to prepare themselves worthily to celebrate the anniversary of the Lord's coming into the world as the incarnate God of love, and to make themselves ready for His final coming as judge, at death and at the end of the world.

The 7–8 grade students of St. Mark’s school invite you to have a night out on Saturday, December, 5:00–10:00 PM. Parents with children from infants to 6th grade may drop them at St. Mark’s so they can spend some quality time together. The students will watch them under adult supervision with a variety of activities, games, pizza dinner, and other forms of fellowship. Children will be divided into groups based on age. A free will donation will be taken upon pickup. The proceeds will go toward their end-of-the-year trip. When was the last time you had a date with your spouse or time to shop without the kids?  This is a great time to do that Christmas shopping.
Student Council
Student Council is sponsoring a Christmas ornament contest.  Students may make their original ornament and enter it by Dec. 4.  No kits allowed.

Photos needed for yearbook
Your photos are needed by the yearbook staff to help make this year’s yearbook the best possible.  To help parents pass these photos that they take all the time at school, a special email account has been established to gather pictures only.  Staff and parents are invited and encouraged to attach great pictures to an email and send it to stmarksmilfordphotos@gmail.com.  Thanks for your help.

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
Preschool will focus on Gingerbread this week! We will read The Gingerbread Man and The Gingerbread Baby. 3’s will practice gingerbread lacing and decorate their own gingerbread man. 4’s will create gingerbread ornaments and write a class book about the gingerbread man. In Bible Time we will continue to learn about the events surrounding the birth of Jesus through our practices for the Christmas program. He is the reason for the season!
Mrs. Reynolds (PK & P-2)
This week Pre-2 is starting a new theme of Christmas and Jesus' birth. We will be learning "Away in a manger" and reading the nativity story. We are also continuing our alphabet book with the letter G and starting our Christmas crafts.  Pre-k is learning the letter G and talking about Giving this week. We will talk about how Jesus was the greatest giver of all for sacrificing His life for us. We are also reading "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and discussing how even the Grinch learned that giving was more important than receiving. We are making gingerbread men and counting the number of decorations we put on them and measuring different items in the room with wrapping paper. We continue to practice for our Christmas program that is on December 15th. The students love the songs we are learning!
Mrs. Sherman (K)
After counting our blessings at Thanksgiving, our thoughts turn to the birth of Jesus and Christmas!  At Bible time, Kindergarten will learn about Advent and hear of the birth of John who prepared the way for Jesus.  The literacy theme focuses on books about weather and seasonal changes.  The class will blend phonemes, identify subjects of sentences and ending sounds and discuss figurative language. At math time, the class will learn about probability and play number card games.  They will observe and draw a Nutcracker during art. The full day students will begin a study of Christmas trees in science and Mexican Christmas traditions in Spanish.  They will also measure Christmas trees, play ABC Scoot and an elf ending sound game.
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
This week the children learned about the children of Israel returning to Jerusalem after the exile, and the prophets that foretold the coming of Jesus.  The children learned to write directions in language arts, and they learned that adults often use imperative sentences.  In phonics we worked on the /ou/ sound and long e.  Maps were the topic in Studies Weekly.  We had a lot of fun learning to read and use maps.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
This week in second grade we are reading about ocean life and more specifically jellyfish.  We are also learning how to differentiate between fact and opinion through text and conversation.  In grammar we are working on contractions and focusing on the tense of the verb while in writing we are learning how to write instructions.  We also learned about food chains found in nature and we made our own model food chains.  Seventh and Eighth graders are learning about the scientific method and how to write a science report for the science fair in March.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion we'll study the parable of the rich fool and talk about where our focus is.  In reading, we're beginning the book, Catwings.  In grammar we're working on common, proper, singular, and plural nouns.  In social studies we'll learn about Wisconsin and Michigan.  Oceans and waterways will be our focus in science.  In math the 3rd graders will work on numbers to millions.  The 4th graders will work on estimating in multiplication and review several ways to do multiplication.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we completed our study of the relationship between Jethro and Moses. We also looked at The Tent Church. In 5th grade math we worked with percent graphs and enjoyed our Unit 5 test! In 6th grade math we worked with equivalent fractions, compared and divided decimals, and we enjoyed our 8th test. In our Language Arts time we continued working on a paper about our favorite pet. We also built our vocabulary and read more of The Face in the Besseldorf Funeral Parlor. In Social Studies we learned about the physical geography of the United States and Canada. We also learned the provinces of Canada. In Science we looked at how technology affects society and both positively and negatively. We also began to work on growing flowers for our flower beds. We also had a regular week of Spelling.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
In History this week, we talked about how to set up a government.  We’re taking a look at the Continental Congress, and realizing they gave themselves too little power.  At a time when “less government” has become a mantra, it’s interesting to see a time in our history where less government wasn’t such a good thing.  Our study of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird continues.  We’re at the point in the novel where integrity, the ability to match up your words and actions, becomes important.  I hope it is always so with the students we teach.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying how God gives us blessings and what we are to do with them.  In 7th grade math the students are evaluating math problems according to the order of operations and solving ratio problems.  In 8th grade math we are converting measures and studying angle relationships.  The students are launching straw rockets in STEM.
