Parents’ Night Out Babysitting Fundraiser—December 12
The 7–8 grade students of St. Mark’s school invite you to have a night out on Saturday, December, 5:00–10:00 PM. Parents with children from infants to 6th grade may drop them at St. Mark’s so they can spend some quality time together. The students will watch them under adult supervision with a variety of activities, games, pizza dinner, and other forms of fellowship. Children will be divided into groups based on age. A free will donation will be taken upon pickup. The proceeds will go toward their end-of-the-year trip. When was the last time you had a date with your spouse or time to shop without the kids? Student Council
Student Council has had some busy
months this school year, and with Christmas coming up, it only gets busier. We
have even more events coming up this December, but we’d first like to thank
everyone who brought in feathers to our Naked Turkey fundraiser. It was one of
our most successful fundraisers in years! Across the whole school, we raised
$410. Almost all of this money will go towards purchasing a new in-ground
basketball hoop complete with striping. We expect to get this as soon as the
weather warms up.
As Christmas is right around the
corner, Student Council would like to invite you to make a homemade ornament to
enter in our Ornament Contest this winter. All students can bring in an
ornament that they, or they and a parent, made at home. If you would like to
participate in the contest, there is a white table in the fellowship hall where
you can drop off your ornament. Please be sure to put your name and grade
somewhere on your ornament and to bring them in by Thursday the 17th.
Lastly, Student Council is hosting another food drive, the
proceeds of which will go towards Milford Miami Ministries. There will be
another table in the fellowship hall where you can bring in non-perishable
items. These are defined as cans and boxes. This food drive will continue
through this week and possibly into the last week of school.

COLLECTION UPDATE – We have a leader in the Box Top$ collection contest – 5th
and 6th grades. They have
collected over 29 Box Top$ per student.
The next leading classroom is 3rd and 4th grades
with 1st grade in third place.
Keep those Box Top$ coming in before December 16th only two
weeks away. Remember to ask relatives
and friends to save the Box Top$ for your classroom. Keep them coming!

The Cookie Walk is back!
Saturday, December 12th 9AM-12PM
Hi
parents! The women of St. Mark’s are baking for your holiday enjoyment! Picture
your holiday table complete with a spread of all different kinds of cookies
without any baking on your part. All you have to do is stop by the Cookie Walk
on Saturday, December 12th. Come by anytime from 9am-12pm for your choice of
delicious and homemade Christmas cookies, cakes, and candies. We provide
the container, you fill it up with your choice of goodies, and we weigh it and
charge by the pound. This event is a fundraiser for the St. Mark’s Women’s
Guild. All profits go to local and international missions. Hope to see you on December
12th.

Preschool
will focus on letter Y for Yellow Star this week! We are excited to prepare for
the celebration of Jesus’ birth and continue to practice for our Christmas
program! Just like the wise men brought gifts to Jesus, both classes will make
gifts for their parents. We will read The First Christmas Night and Song
of the Stars and retell the account of Jesus’ birth with nativity figures.

Pre-K is learning the letter Y this week our
theme is Christmas. We will be practicing sight words and color words this
week. Decorating paper trees by adding a pattern to them. Measuring things in
our classroom with wrapping paper. Asking ourselves does it take more wrapping
paper when things are bigger to cover them? We will review the Nativity
story and make our own ornaments.
Pre-2 is also
learning about the true meaning of Christmas and how we celebrate because it is
Jesus' birthday. We will continue our alphabet books with the letter H this
week. We are using play-doh to decorate gingerbread houses and sorting pom-poms
by color.We are also working on something special for our parents for
Christmas.

At Bible
time, the class will hear the account of the first CHRISTmas and how God sent
His son, Jesus, so that He could save us from our
sins! During math, they will order strips of paper to form a
Christmas tree and play Top-It. The full day students will also measure
Christmas object with gumdrops and complete 10 frame addition. During
literacy time, the class will hear stories about what animals do when the
weather changes. They continue to identify phonemes and beginning and
ending sounds. They will also begin a mini unit about the Gingerbread
Man. The full day students will complete a STEM project to help the
Gingerbread Man cross the river without getting wet.

This week the children learned about
Zachariah's conversation with the angel Gabriel in the temple, and
the outcome of that conversation. In math, the children
started making a scroll counting to 1,000. This is a ten day
process. They also had fun measuring Christmas decorations. In
language arts we reviewed and learned more contractions. They also worked
with maps, the compass rose, and map keys in Social Studies. Our Weather
books are complete and ready for you to view. Please stop by the school
hallway and take a look at what the children have been working on in
artist/writer's workshop.

The second graders have been working hard with their schoolmates
to prepare for their Christmas program on the 17th and we cannot wait to
see your smiling faces at the program! In reading we are wrapping up the
reading unit by reviewing the skills we have learned so far this year and
especially looking at facts and opinions since we will be learning about
writing persuasive essays and letters in our next lesson. We took a test
over chapter 4 in Math and we are looking forward to working with geometric
shapes for the next few weeks. For art and science we created our very
own crystal snowflakes using a Borax solution and pipe cleaners. In
social studies we are learning how to use maps to find locations or to learn
information about an area. Seventh and eighth graders are working on
identifying variables in science experiments as well as conducting their own
experiments.

Along
with our regular school work this week, we continued to prepare for Christmas -
finding ways to share God's love with others. We collected food for MMM,
made playdough to give to our Pre-K chapel buddies, made mini-Christmas trees
to remind us that God's love is everlasting, and of course, worked on our songs
and parts for the Christmas program. Academically, we also did a lot. In
religion, we studied the account of Jesus' birth. In reading, we reread Catwings
with partners and then individually wrote opinion/proof paragraphs for each
chapter. In grammar we worked on the complicated rules of making singular
words into plurals. In social studies we learned about Minnesota.
In science we learned about different kinds of soil and rocks. In math,
the 3rd graders began the week exploring estimates and polygons and then ended
the week learning about decimals. The 4th graders worked on powers of 10,
rounding large numbers, comparing data, and ended with a chapter review.

In
our Bible time this week we looked at The Tent Church. In 5th grade
math we worked with organizing data. In
6th grade math we worked with decimals, mixed numbers, and
circumference. In our Language Arts time we continued building our vocabulary
and read more of The Face in the
Besseldorf Funeral Parlor. In Social Studies we remembered the events of
December 7, 1941. We also worked on power point presentations on provinces or
territories of Canada. In Science we began to look at environmental science. We
had a regular week of Spelling.

We’re
learning about the War for Independence.
Imagine a small group of farmers with guns taking on the supreme
fighting force in the world, at the time.
You understand why nearly ½ of the colonists did not support the
war. In Literature, we’re learning the
ugliness of racial prejudice in Lee’s To
Kill a Mockingbird. All God’s
children don’t seem to be able to get along much better now than in the
1930’s. We use different separators now.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying how God gives
us blessings and what we are to do with them. In 7th grade math the students are graphing
functions and writing decimals in scientific notation. In 8th grade math we are studying
the slope-intercept formula for lines and solving percent word problems. The students are experimenting with soda
bottles and every day chemicals in STEM.
