Thoughts
Today, conversations between teens and
adults can be awkward. Teens will often
avoid these conversations while parents may be left frustrated by the lack of
communication. For some of you, this is
not true. You have taught your child to
tell you everything (well-almost everything).
You have established a wonderful parent-child relationship. My hat is off to you. However, more common is the first situation –
little or no talking. Here are a few
suggestions that you can ask to get things started.
1) Ask interesting questions that requires more
than a one-word answer.
2) Listen and notice
3) Ask who they would text, if they could text
anyone in the world right now and be guaranteed a response, and what they would
ask that person.
4) Ask what one world evil they would destroy if
possible, and why.
5) Ask why they chose the outfits they’re
wearing right now.
6) Ask what songs are on their current
playlists, and why.
7) Ask what their favorite phone app is and what
it does.

on this topic next week.

Family Fun Night
Friday,
November 20, the Family Ministries team invites all families to come to an
Advent preparation Family Fun Night. A
potluck (bring a dish to share) will begin at 6:15 PM followed by a devotion
and a family activity. This is a great
way to prepare our hearts for Christmas during the Advent season.
Box Tops for Education
Once again we
are having a contest to see which classroom can collect the most Box Top$. Starting today until December 16th
we will collect Box Top$ for Education.
Be sure to ask grandparents, aunts and uncles, and friends to collect
the Box Top$ for your classroom. We will
award the winning classroom with an ice cream treat. Happy collecting!
Walk-a-thon Rewards
The students who received coupons from
the Walk-a-thon will be able to use them on Monday, November 23 for lunch with
the principal (leave at 11:50 AM) and on Tuesday, Nov. 24 for stringing the
principal and popping a water balloon over a staff member’s head (12:30 PM).
Student Council Needs Your Help
The second quarter is well underway,
and Student Council is already planning for Christmas. In an effort to decorate the school
sufficiently this year, Student Council is asking for donations of
decorations. We are looking especially
for Christmas lights, ornaments, garland, etc.
Donations must be brought in by December 2 and can be dropped off in the
marked cardboard box inside the school entrance.
Our school will be dong a fundraiser
called the “Naked Turkey”. Each class
has a turkey. You can buy a feather for
your classes’ turkey for $0.25. The
class with the most feathers at the end gets a prize. You can purchase a feather before or after
school November 16-19. The funds will be
used to purchase an outdoor basketball and pay for the striping.
School closings or delays
St. Mark’s will communicate this
message via email to each parent, Facebook, and TV (channel 9 only). Also, if Milford is closed or delayed, then
so is St. Mark’s. Those that ride other
busses to school must realize that if their district is closed, no
transportation is available to St. Mark’s (if St. Mark’s is open).
Operation Christmas Child—Fill a Shoe Box
It’s Operation Christmas Child time! The Women’s Guild of St. Mark’s church invites all to participate in this mission. Operation Christmas Child is a program that allows us to provide Christmas presents to children in other countries who are affected by war, poverty, disease or disaster. Here’s how it works: Grab a shoe box from under the Women’s Guild table near the Fellowship Hall. Choose either a box for a boy or girl. Follow the directions in the attached flier which will tell you how to fill the box. FYI ~ No toothpaste, please. Write a check for $7 to “Samaritan’s Purse” to help cover the cost of shipping these gifts overseas. Place your check inside your filled box, put the rubber band back around the box, and make sure your boy/girl label is on the box with appropriate age range marked. Return the filled box to the Women’s Guild table by November 16. Thank you!

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey
(P-3 & P-4)
In
November Preschool is focusing on transportation. This week’s theme is cars.
Each child will bring a toy car to school, and we will practice sorting cars by
color, shape, and size. We will also discuss the importance of transportation
safety. 3’s will create tire track artwork and wash the dirty cars at the ‘car
wash.’ 4’s will create letter C car artwork and paper plate cars. At Bible Time
we will (already!) begin to practice our songs for the Christmas program.
Mrs.
Reynolds (PK & P-2)
Pre-2 is continuing their theme on families.
We will talk about how many people are in our families this week. We are
learning about the first sin in the Bible, how thankful we are for God's
forgiveness. We are continuing our alphabet books with the letter E and make
our E's into elephants.
Pre-K is
learning the letter B and talking about buses and boats. Our science experiment
this week is finding out what floats and what sinks. We will make predictions
on which things with float or sink then test our theory in our sensory table.
We are working on a thankful tree for our bulletin board students are
telling us what they are thankful for. We have begun practice for our
Christmas program and the students are loving the songs. We are excited to
continue that this week
Mrs.
Sherman (K)
Kindergarten
welcomed the 4 year preschool classes as they visited Kindergarten. The
boys and girls were excited to host and share their knowledge with the younger
children. The class began learning about Pilgrim children and how
different life was long ago. At Bible time, they heard the account of the
Israelites crossing the Jordan River and entering the Promised Land.
During reading, they read books about wheels, blended phonemes, named synonyms
and identified words beginning with /p/. At math time, they wrote numbers
1- 20, made a counting by 10's turkey and solved number stories. They also,
made a craft to share with the veterans on Veteran's Day. The full
day students practiced for their Thanksgiving play to be presented to their families. They
wrote and blended CVC words, completed beginning sounds sorts and made a sight
word turkey. They also played partner math games, ordered turkeys by size
and sorted and graphed turkey feathers.
Mrs.
Reisenbichler (1)
David and Solomon are the two Biblical
leaders we studied this week. We learned that with God all things are
possible. The children are practicing for a performance of The Three
Bears. We will perform our reader's theater presentation to the
kindergarten class the week of Thanksgiving. We will work on prosody to
make our performance the best possible. Transportation was the theme of
this week’s social studies lessons. The children watched a video on
transportation, learned a song, and completed worksheets based on this learning.
In science, we learned about bears.
Ms.
Rhonemus (2)
This week in second grade we finished reading about all kinds of
vegetables. We read about a girl and her mom growing Chinese vegetables,
giant vegetables, and community gardens. Since it was Veteran's Day we
also learned a little bit about the armed forces and wrote thank you notes for
the veterans that we would be eating lunch with on Veteran's Day. In math
we are starting to work on reading temperature while continuing to improve our
money and clock reading skills. We also started to learn about the
Pilgrims and how they came over on the Mayflower. Seventh and Eighth grade took a test on the
nervous system.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion we'll be going over the
accounts of Jesus' transfiguration and feeding the crowd. In reading, we're
getting to the exciting part of The Tiger Rising. We're getting
really good at finding the similes as we read! In grammar we'll
learn the difference between some verbs that are easy to misuse. In
social studies we'll work on a map of the southeastern states and then learn
about our own state, Ohio. In science we'll continue to learn about force
and motion and do some experiments. In math, the 3rd graders will work on
multiplication and division while the 4th graders work on measurements and
convert metric measurements to decimals.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In
our Bible time this week we looked at the power of prayer and the importance of
praying for church leaders. We also prepared our chapel play on November 18th.
In 5th grade math we began to work with fractions. In 6th
grade math we worked with fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers. In our
Language Arts time we began reading The
Face in the Besseldorf Funeral Parlor. A humorous mystery. In Social
Studies we began work on our next power point about a state in our country. In
Science we worked with technological systems and design. In Spelling we worked with word shapes, word
search worksheets, dictation, and proofreading. We also took our 11th
test!
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
We are learning
about the French and Indian War. We’ll
also learn why England thought it fair to levy taxes on the colonies, due to
the increased cost of fighting that war, in great measure, for the colonists’
benefit. Now, we KNOW that the colonists
didn’t think the same way, or we would all be speaking English. Well, you know what I mean.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying how God
created the world. In 7th
grade math the students are studying different options for writing quotients. In 8th grade math we are solving ratio
problems and studying the slope of functions.
The students are making edible cars in STEM.
