Notes
Have you ever wondered what the church year is all about?  Here is the Reader’s Digest version.  Advent begins the church year because the church year begins where Jesus' earthly life began — in the Old Testament prophecies of his incarnation. After Advent comes Christmas, which is about his birth; then Epiphany, about his miracles and ministry; then Lent, about his Calvary-bound mission; then Easter, about his resurrection and the sending of the apostles; and then Ascension (40 days after Easter) and Pentecost, with the sending of the Holy Spirit.
The first half of the church year (approximately December through June) highlights the life of Christ. The second half (approximately June through November) highlights the teachings of Christ. The parables and miracles play a big part here. That's "the church year in a nutshell."  Epiphany was yesterday, Tuesday, January 6.

Box Tops Update
Well we had a BIG upset with the Box Tops Contest.  The 7th and 8th grades pulled it out the last week before Christmas.  They averaged 28.57 Box Tops per student for first place.  Congrats 7th and 8th grades!  The second place was taken by 5th and 6th with 23.57 per student; third place went to Kindergarten with 22.37 per student; and fourth place was taken by 3rd and 4th grades with 20.10 per student.  A total of 1954 points were collected the past 6/7 weeks.  That was super!  The next date for sending in Box Tops is March 1st.  Keep saving those Box Tops because you never know we may have another contest before the end of the school year.
Market Day Coordinator Needed
St. Mark’s is in need of a Market Day coordinator.  This job would take about 1-2 hours per week.  It involves entering paper orders and calling customers that have not yet ordered for the month.  Please contact the office if interested.
Dance Club starts January 6 for grades 1-4 and Jan. 8 for grades 5-8
Spelling Bee
The St. Mark’s Spelling Bee will be on Monday, January 12, starting at 10:30.  Students may start studying the words found at www.spellingbee.com.

Classroom information
Mrs. Schulte (Pre-2)
We were very excited to start the New Year together.  This month’s theme is “At the Zoo” and this week we did a little “Zig Zag around the Zoo”.  We filled our bubble letter G with grass.  We read Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire and used our felt board to recreate this colorful story.  Our Dramatic Play area is now an animal hospital where we used our special doctor kit to help our Zoo animals feel better.  We ended the day moovin’ and groovin’ with zoo songs and activities.
Mrs. Frey (Pre-3,4)
Preschool is excited to be back and learn about W for Winter! 3’s will experiment with the color white in a color mixing activity and play a ‘dress the snowman’ game. 4’s will add snow to their pictures and create snowglobes. Both classes will have a ‘wear blue and white’ day and pajama day. During Bible Time 3’s will learn about Jesus as a young boy in the temple. 4’s will learn about Jesus’ healing power in Jairus’s daughter. He is stronger than death!
Mrs. Reynolds (PK)
I hope everyone had a fabulous Christmas vacation! Pre-K is excited to be back at school! This week we will be learning about the letter W and winter animals. As the weather is getting colder we will discuss hibernation and how animals stay warm in the cold winter air. We will be doing an experiment using ice and shortening to demonstrate how an animals fat can protect them from the cold. We will also practice counting objects and making estimations. This month we are learning about the number 6, rectangles, and the color blue and white.
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Kindergarten quickly settled back into their school routines after the break.  They were excited to spend time reading and playing in the igloo.  During Bible time, Kind. heard about two people, Simeon and Anna, who waited a long time to meet the Savior.  The class identified coins and their values, counted tally marks and played monster squeeze in math.  They, also, wrote about their families, explored magnets and  reviewed lowercase letters and ending sounds.  The full day students completed their reindeer study, played new math games and spent several days making story predictions and retelling Tacky the Penguin.
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1-2)
It is great to be back to school with a healthy classroom of children.  This week, we focused on Epiphany in Jesus Time.  Both classes started new units in language arts.  The first graders are reading  The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs and the second graders are reading Sleeping Ugly.  In science, the children finished their STEM project and started a new unit on matter.  They also started writing a new book of poems based on weather in artist/writer's workshop.  The big news for second graders is they started learning cursive writing.  They've been waiting patiently to learn this skill.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
We're ready for the 2nd half of the year!  In religion we continued with the accounts of Moses and the people of Israel as they wandered in the wilderness.  In grammar we will begin a study of prefixes, suffixes, and roots.  In reading, we began the book, The Whipping Boy.  In science, we learned about weathering and erosion and did a cool water erosion experiment using M&Ms.  In social studies, we continued our studies of Ohio Indians by leaning about the Wyandot and Delaware Indians.  In Spanish, we began learning words for parts of the face.  In math, the 3rd graders began working with decimals.  The 4th graders worked with division and reviewed decimals.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we looked at the importance of Jesus resurrection, and the reason Jesus redeemed us. In 5th grade math we worked on organizing data into line plots and stem and leaf plots. In 6th grade we worked with rounding decimals, simplifying and dividing fractions.  In our Language Arts time we worked on the introduction to our Learning Fair papers. We also worked on first and third person character views.  In Social Studies we worked with the countries of East Africa. In Science we continued our study of plants by planting marigolds. We also read and noted a section of our textbook dealing with plant growth.  In Spelling we added suffixes to words and looked at the change in the accented syllables.
Mr. Mayo (7-8)
Now that we’re back from Christmas vacation, we’ll be tackling a rather extensive review of the Industrial Age in the U.S., including labor unions and the good they did.  There were weeks when, as a full-time administrator, I put in 72 hours in a week, but I cannot imagine doing that every week, particularly when my wages were insufficient to feed, clothe, and house my family properly.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we will study what God’s Word says about decision making.  In 7th grade math the students are calculating the area and perimeter of various quadrilaterals and classifying triangles.  In 8th grade math the students are learning about sequences, graphing inequalities, and calculating fractions with negative exponents.  In science we are starting our study of chemistry.  The students are planning and making a game in STEM.
