Thoughts
Last
week I made some notes on homework. This
week I would like to dwell a little on family money. No, this will not be about how much your
family could give to the principal. Aren’t
your children always asking you to buy this or that for them? Here is a lesson that might help. Label a spiral notebook “Family Spending
Journal.” Have everyone in the family
list every way they spend money in two weeks.
Include everything like taxes from income, insurance, mortgage, candy,
other treats, etc. School lunch,
athletic equipment necessary for play, and field trip are also included from
the student’s viewpoint. After two weeks
share and talk about the many ways that your family spends their blessings from
God. I would think that most children
would be surprised by the number of expenses and the size of the family’s
bills. They may still ask for that item
at the store, but when you say no, they may better understand the why not.

Parents’ Night Out
Parents’ Night Out
Babysitting Fundraiser—October 10
The 7–8 grade students of St. Mark’s school invite you to have a night out on Saturday, October 10, 5:00–9:00 pm. Parents with children from infants to 6th grade may drop them at St. Mark’s so they can spend some quality time together. The students will watch them under adult supervision with a variety of activities, games, pizza dinner ($3), and other forms of fellowship. Children will be divided into groups based on age. A free will donation will be taken upon pickup. The proceeds will go toward their end-of-the-year trip. When was the last time you had a date with your spouse or time to shop without the kids?

Walk-a-thon
St. Mark’s conducts only one major fund-raiser a year (not one
every 3-4 weeks). Today is the kickoff
of our walk-a-thon. Information is being
sent home with each student. Prizes are
per individual not per family. Let’s
make this the best year ever. The actual
walk is Oct. 23.

Mark’s Student Council is asking you to please come to our first bonfire. It will be on Oct. 9, 2015 (Friday) at 7PM
until 8:30. We will be having s’mores, songs,
and a devotion. Please bring your own
chairs, flashlights, and blankets. We
hope to see you there!
Veterans’ Day
For
Veterans’ Day, we are having the veterans come for lunch. If you have a veteran in your family, please
bring them on Wednesday, November 11. We
will provide lunch for them.

Preschool
is learning all about fire safety this week during Fire Prevention Week. We
will practice phrases such as “Get Low and Go” and “Stop, Drop, and Roll.” We
will also learn about smoke detectors, the importance of having a meeting
place, and that firefighters are our friends even though their air masks can
make them look scary. 3’s will create flame art, fire trucks, and a fire hose
number line. They will receive a special visit from a real firefighter. 4’s
will create a fire safety magnet, write a class book of fire safety tips, and
play fire safety number identification bingo. Miami Township Fire Department
will visit. At Bible Time 3’s will hear about Jacob’s beloved son, Joseph, and
the jealousy of his brothers. God helped Joseph be kind and forgiving to his
brothers. 4’s will hear about God’s faithfulness to Abraham and Sarah. Although
they waited a long time, God kept his promise and baby Isaac was born.

In Pre-2 this week we are start our "On
the Farm" theme. We will be making tractor tracks in paint and completing
day 4 of our creation books. Our color of the month is orange and we are
celebrating by wearing orange this week! We will also be going on a color hunt
to find our color orange. We are very excited to be entering our second theme
of the year!
In Pre-K we
are reviewing the letters we have learned thus far. We are revisiting the
letters A,F and H. We will also be celebrating the beginning of fall with fall
centers and digging for fall leaves in our sensory bin. We will be going on a
fall nature walk and looking for fall leaves. In Bible we will be learning
about Noah and how God used Him and the promise God made his people with the
rainbow.
Mrs.
Sherman (K)
Kindergarten
is enjoying the fall weather and fun fall science activities. This week,
the class focuses on apples - tasting and graphing, comparing weights,
determining if apples sink or float and sequencing an apple life cycle.
they will also practice fire safety and have a visit from the fire
department. During Bible time, they will hear the account of Jacob.
Even though Jacob sinned, God had a plan for things to work out for the
best. At math time, the boys and girls will review shapes as they create
a shape scarecrow and identify numbers while playing apple lotto. On
Friday, the class will explore Gorman Heritage Farm. The full day
students will complete their first STEM project as they design and build an
apple container. They will also measure with apples at math time and mix
and fix popcorn words during reading.

This week we learned more about the
Ten Commandments in Jesus Time. In math, we reviewed pennies and
nickels. Journaling started this week in language arts, and we had our
first spelling unit with words that are tested. Most of the children
completed their book in artist/writer's workshop on the time of day. In
social studies we continued to talk about rules and why we need them.
This fit nicely with our lesson in Jesus Time.
Ms.
Rhonemus (2)
The second graders got to read "Spider's Diary" and
uncover the tale of an unlikely friendship while learning about spiders and
insects. We also looked into determining the cause and effect while
reading. In math we continued to practice addition and subtraction while
also taking a look at weighing objects. Meanwhile, in social studies we
are learning about being good citizens. On Friday the second graders get to
join the first graders and kindergartners on a field trip to Gorman Heritage
Farms. The seventh and eighth graders will be presenting their anti-smoking
ads and taking a test over the respiratory system and excretory system.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
Our theme for October is
"Bee" kind. The students are going to try to be kind and
helpful each day. We'll also be working on thankfulness to those who are kind
to us by writing a little note to them. In religion we're studying the
account of Jesus healing the official's son. We're also working on our
chapel play about kindness which we'll be giving on Oct. 21. You're
invited to come at see it at 9:15 that day. In reading we're beginning
the book, The Skirt. We'll be working on similes throughout the
book. In grammar we'll work on direct objects. In social studies we'll be
learning about Maryland and Delaware. In math, the 3rd graders will begin the
week with a test and then begin a chapter on measurement. The 4th graders
will work on multiplication and division and use those skills to learn about
Africa.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In
our Bible time this week we continued our study of Joseph. In 5th
grade math we worked with angles, protractors, and compasses. In 6th
grade math we worked with divisibility, fractions, ratio, rate, and writing
division answers as a mixed number. In our Language Arts time we finished
reading Summer of the Monkeys. We
wrote a paper on our favorite character. In Social Studies we worked with
population. We also began to research a state and prepare a power point on the
state. In Science we worked on scale models of our classroom and looked at how
mathematics is used in science. In Spelling
we went back to a normal week working studying a list of words with a Biblical
focus on Proverbs 9:10.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
We are
finishing The Red Pony, and are
moving on to the final test. The class
seems overjoyed when I tell them that the test will be open-book, and
take-home. Then they see that every
question requires a paragraph to explain why something happened a certain way
to fit with one theme or another.
MWAHAHAHA! We’re nearing the end of our History study of discoveries in
the “New World”, and the goal of finding a “Northwest Passage” through North
America, to the Atlantic. We can see
conflicts on the horizon, but we know we speak English, so we’re pretty sure we
know how they turned out.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying “Who Am I”.
In 7th grade math the students
are multiplying and dividing mixed numbers and solving 2-step word problems. In 8th grade math we are studying transformations
and exponents. The students are learning
to write directions in communicating a project in STEM.
