Thoughts
Happy Epiphany!  What is Epiphany?  The Feast of the Epiphany, or Manifestation (revelation) of Christ to the Gentiles, is observed on January 6th. Epiphany comes from a Greek word meaning “showing forth, appearance, manifestation, revelation.” The Feast of Epiphany proclaims the good news that Jesus revealed God to all humanity.  At Christmas the church celebrates the birth of Jesus, when God entered fully into the human experience. The Feast of the Epiphany takes the Christmas proclamation a step further, when the divine revelation in Jesus was revealed to the world as the magi came from the east.  The eve of the Feast of the Epiphany (Twelfth Night) marks the end of the Christmas celebration. Epiphany is today, January 6th.

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
Preschool is excited to be back and learn about W for Winter! 3’s will experiment with the color white in a color mixing activity and play a ‘dress the snowman’ game. 4’s will add snow to their pictures and create snowglobes. Both classes will have a ‘wear blue and white’ day and pajama day. During Bible Time 3’s will learn about Jesus as a young boy in the temple. 4’s will learn about Jesus’ healing power in Jairus’s daughter. He is stronger than death!
Mrs. Reynolds (PK & P-2)
Pre-K is learning all about penguins this week! We are studying their life cycle and making a list of penguin facts. We are using different shapes to build our own penguins and mixing up some snow paint for our penguins to nest in. We will be practicing our handwriting by writing the letter P in salt on our cookie sheets in the classroom. We are learning about David this week in Bible and how brave he was even when he stood against a giant because he knew God would protect him.
Pre-2 is starting a study on Zoo animals. We will name different animals that we know are at the Zoo and reading the book "Put me in the Zoo" and making our own spotted leopards. We will also continue our alphabet book with the letter J. J is for Jesus!
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Happy New Year and welcome back to school!  The boys and girls are excited to welcome winter and the activities associated with the season.  The class will study Inuits and igloos as they enjoy the classroom igloo.  They will also begin a unit about walruses and other arctic animals.  The Bible lesson for the week is the account of Simeon and Anna meeting Jesus.  They had waited a long time for the baby who would fulfill God's promise of a Savior.  During math, Kindergarten will identify coins, review probability and play math games.  The reading lessons focus on informational texts about animals.  The class will identify beginning and ending sounds and blend and build words.  The full day students will research walruses and create an informational book.  During math, they will learn new math games which reinforce probability, counting on and making 10.
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
Happy New Year!  It was so nice to see "my kids" on Monday.  This week in Jesus Time we learned about Elijah and Elisha.  These were two great prophets who experienced many of the same troubles we face today in sharing God's Word with others.  In math, we completed our scrolls in counting to 1,000 and work with comparison stories using greater than, less than, and equal.  The scientific methods was taught so that we can begin work on our science fair projects.  We also started a new author's study on Phoebe Gilman.  She likes to use rhyme in her writing and hides illustrations from other books she wrote in her illustrations.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
After a lovely two week break, second grader are continuing to hone their skills with persuasive writing while reading "Smart Animals" and "Charlotte's Web."  We are looking at 3-D shapes and learning how to sort shapes based on attributes in math.  For Science we are finishing a module on Food Webs and ecosystems and then we will be setting up a classroom experiment.  This week's spelling list also includes the many different ways we make the long "a" sound in words.  Seventh and Eighth graders are learning about how the moon affects the earth and how the Earth moves through space.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
Happy New Year!  In religion we studied two of Jesus' parables: the rich fool and the lost sheep.  In language arts, we began a new book, Riding Freedom, and worked on possessives.  In social studies we learned about Iowa (and heard about Christmas trips.)  In science we learned about natural disasters and made models for a tsunami and seismograph.  In math, the 3rd graders finished a chapter on decimals and took a test.  The 4th graders began a chapter on long division.  We finished this last week of the quarter with a spelling bee and early dismissal.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we studied how the tabernacle foreshadows what Jesus does for us as our Savior. We also studied Korah’s rebellion. In 5th grade math we worked with fractions and took our Unit 6 test.  In 6th grade math we rounded decimals, divided decimals mentally by 10 and 100, simplified fractions, divided fractions, and worked with common denominators. In our Language Arts time we worked on late and missing assignments as well as wrote a descriptive paper on the orange. In Social Studies we worked on the effect of history on the U.S. and Canada. In Science we worked on our Science Fair projects and continued to study populations and communities. In Spelling we worked through Unit 15 on words with the k and kw sounds.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
As we get back to the routines of the classroom some of the students seem comforted by a return to the familiar.  Others got pretty familiar with lounging around doing as little as possible.  We’re finishing up the Revolutionary War and continuing our study of prejudice and courage, as found in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird.  Since it came out in 1960, it was such a poignant book for the times.  Did you know that 10 different publishers had rejected it before one took a chance on it, but had her re-write it for nearly 3 years?
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are studying how God gives us blessings and what we are to do with them.  In 7th grade math the students are adding and subtracting negative numbers and calculating the circumference of a circle.  In 8th grade math we are simplifying fractions with negative exponents and converting rates.  The students are in STEM.
