Thoughts
Volunteer service hours
are a great way to serve our community. As
we approach the winter season it brings to mind the extreme cold, snow, ice,
and other wintry conditions we expect to see this time of year. So grab a cup
of hot chocolate and consider these creative ways your family can serve their
community this winter.
- Offer to take an elderly neighbor to the store to stock up on winter supplies/groceries, or have your neighbor make a list for you to pick up while you're out.
- Shovel your neighbor's walkway. Or, get your exercise in for the day and do the whole street!
- Place salt on someone's front door steps or that neglected bit of sidewalk between houses.
- If others lose power, offer your house as a location for cell phone/laptop charging.
- Invite neighborhood kids/families to build snowmen if schools are cancelled.
- Create a free hot chocolate stand outside a busy shopping area.
- Offer to help someone scrape the ice off their car or scrape someone's car when you do yours in the morning/after work.
- Send thank you notes to police, firefighters, road crews, etc.
- Order a PIZZA for your local police, fire station, or road crew!

Let’s Have Another Contest – Box Top$ for Education –
Starting now
begin collecting and turning in your Box Top$ for a new contest. The last winners were grades 5 and 6. Congrats 5th and 6th
graders! I hope you enjoy your special
treat. This contest will end February 17th.
Ask friends and relatives to save Box Top$ for your class. Turn them in to your classroom collection bin
before the 17th. The
classroom with the highest percent per student collected will be the
winner. We are about half way to our
goal ($1,000) for this school year. Have
fun collecting!
Winter Closings and
Delays
Watch you email, wcpo.com, or channel
9 on the news for St. Mark’s Lutheran delays or closings. We follow Milford lead on this matter.
Science Fair
Although the Science Fair isn’t until
March 18, I wanted to let parents know that a display board can be purchased
for $3 at the school. I have seen some
boards in local stores for over $8, so I purchased a quantity for a reduced
price. Also, is anyone knows of a
willing judge, please let the office know.

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey
(P-3 & P-4)
Preschool
is studying letter P for Penguins this week! 3’s will create torn paper
penguins and discover how penguins stay warm in the cold Antarctic waters. 4’s
will make paper tube penguins and create a class book entitled “Penguins Can…”
During Bible Time 3’s will learn about Jesus’ baptism and how He set an example
for us even though He was without sin. 4’s will learn about Jesus’ healing
power as he gives sight to blind Bartimaeus.
Mrs.
Reynolds (PK & P-2)
Pre-k is reading "The Mitten" this week and learning the letter M. We will be talking about all the animals in the story and what they do in the winter. We will make our own mittens and measure how many mittens tall we are. In Bible we are continuing to learn about David.
In Pre-2 we are learning about zoo babies this week and how different animals like elephants and tigers grow. We will also experiment with making vertical lines in paint and walking in a zig zag through cones. Our Bible this lesson is on Joseph and how he forgave his brothers.
Mrs.
Sherman (K)
With the
arrival of winter and finally, a small bit of snow, Kindergarten will enjoy
some snowy activities. They will have sight word snowball fights, create
silly snowmen and write about what a snowman should not do. At Bible Time, the
class will hear of the Wise Men visiting and worshipping Jesus. During
math, they are using a number line to order numbers and working with
coins. Literature, at reading time, will focus on animal habitats.
Kindergarten has been enjoying reading and working in the class
igloo. As they continue to learn about igloos and the Inuit people, they
will design an igloo, then build and test it during STEM.
The full day students have been playing math and language arts games to review
skills. This week, some games they will play are Nickel/Penny
Top-It, Go Fish Number Names and Blast Off With Rhymes. They will
complete their arctic animal book about walruses and begin learning about polar
bears.

This week our lessons in
Jesus Time were about Elisha. On Tuesday, the children enjoyed
a cup of hot chocolate and then did a writing project based on our tasty
drink. In math, the children continue to work on fact power and are
making good progress. One child has mastered addition
and another one or two are extremely close to mastery. Our lessons
in reading this week took us to the moon as we read and learned about the
first lunar landing. In science, we received our science fair questions
and wrote our hypothesis and started on our procedures.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
This
week in second grade we are reading about music while working on recognizing
and using text and graphic features that are often found in informational
text. We are also working with the vowel digraphs ai an ay through
various vocabulary activities. On Monday the students had an opportunity to
work on coding which is computer programming used in animation for videos or
games. In social studies we learned about various symbols in the United States
such as the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell. We also took in Math
over shapes, lines, and fact families.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
This week in
religion we studied the parable of the lost sheep and learned how Jesus is our
Good Shepherd. We continued the story of Riding Freedom while
learning more of the 1800s in reading. In grammar we worked on different
kinds of adjectives. We learned about Missouri and North Dakota in social
studies. In science we learned about ways to conserve resources. In
math the 3rd graders began a new unit on lines, angles, and shapes. The
fourth graders continued to learn how to do long division.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In
our Bible time this week we studied Korah’s rebellion and the waters at
Meribah. In 5th grade math we worked with exponents and the order of
operations. In 6th grade math
we took our 10th test with happy hearts. We also looked at
probability and chance as well as added and subtracted fractions. In our
Language Arts time we completed a descriptive paper on the orange. We then began a persuasive writing on
school uniforms. In Social Studies we worked on the effect of history on the
U.S. and Canada. In Science we continued to study populations and communities.
In Spelling we worked through Unit 16 on words with the z sound.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
We
are finishing up Harper Lee’s To Kill a
Mockingbird. I was explaining to my class that when the book was published,
in 1960 there were African-Americans trying to register to vote. In some Southern towns, dogs attacked them,
fire hoses were knocking them to the ground, and policemen were beating them
with clubs. It was shown on television,
which finally made people say “enough”. In History, we’re about to begin learning
about the government these brave people decided to establish. It was SUCH an experiment! God has richly blessed us.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are preparing for our
chapel presentation on January 20. In 7th
grade math the students are solving ratio word problems and studying geometric
solids. In 8th grade math we
are solving percent of change word problems and studying direct variation. The students are making a best tire for
raining conditions in STEM.
