Thoughts
Parenting can be a struggle.  In 7-8 grade religion, we are studying parenting, disobedient children, and conflict resolution.  One of several observations that I have made recently is that some parents are incapable of speaking to their children in a sentence that ends in a period.  Every sentence ends in a questions mark.  The hierarchy of parent over child no longer exists.  Instead of parents exercising their authority because they know what’s best, they are focusing on making children happy and boosting their self-esteem.  A parent’s job is to teach children right from wrong, teach them the meaning of life and keep their children safe.  Parents could focus on helping children develop skills such as self-control, humility, and conscientiousness.  These things are the biggest predictors of future success in adulthood.  I have noticed that parents today are spending more time with their children than my generation.  But, this time is spent more in shuttling children from one extracurricular activity to the next or spending time going their work for them.
So where do I think the focus should be?
1.         Have family meals at home and make that a top priority
2.         Take screens out of the bedroom
3.         Put screens in public places and limit how they are used (install software like My Mobile Watchdog.
4.         Teach humility
5.         Have an alliance between the school and you.

Mystery Box
The mystery has been solved involving the mystery box.  Over 17,000 pennies were collected for Bethesda with kindergarten claiming the most.  They won the box.  There were drinks, snacks, candy, a movie, and enough on a gift card to purchase a new game for the class.
Call issued to Mr. Joel Witt
The Voters of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church has issued a call (request) for a new principal for next school year.  Mr. Witt has been teaching in Lutheran schools since 1993 and a principal since 2001.  He has his MA in elementary administration.  Their family has 5 children ages 10 and older.  Please pray that God’s will would be done.

Winter Closings and Delays
Watch you email, wcpo.com, or channel 9 on the news for St. Mark’s Lutheran delays or closings.  We follow Milford’s lead on this matter.
Science Fair
Although the Science Fair isn’t until March 18, I wanted to let parents know that a display board can be purchased for $3 at the school.  I have seen some boards in local stores for over $8, so I purchased a quantity for a reduced price.  Also, is anyone knows of a willing judge, please let the office know.

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
Preschool is studying letter Q for Queens and Kings. Both classes will create different castles and crowns. On Queen and King dress up day students will imagine what life would be like if they were the Queens and Kings for a day. We will discuss elements of a fairy tale and read various fairy tales. In Bible Time 3’s will hear the account of Jairus’s daughter raised from the dead in which Jesus will show His power over death to Jairus. 4’s will hear the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus made an example of this foreigner to show an expert in the law how to show mercy.
Mrs. Reynolds (PK & P-2)
This week Pre-K is reviewing the letters M and W. We are continue to talk about animals that hibernate and migrate during winter. Last week we practiced hibernating like bats by sitting upside down in our chairs. This week we will feel the difference extra fat can make in the cold by using ice cold water and butter (as our extra fat) to see how much warmer the water feels with a protectant layer of fat around our hands. I also froze a glove (Elsa's hand) and we are making predictions on how long it will take it to melt in our classroom. I will ask: Will it melt faster in water? Will it melt faster if we hold it? We will write down our predictions and log our results. In Bible we are learning about Jesus' twelve disciples and how Jesus called them to be fishers of men.
The 2 year old class has been learning about zoo animals. This week we will be making giraffes with our handprints, discussing what different zoo animals eat, and making zoo animal sounds. For Bible we will be looking at Jesus' baptism.
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Kindergarten will hear the account of Jesus choosing His disciples and learn the Bible verse: Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men (Matthew 4:19).  At math time, they will create symmetrical snowflakes, compare shapes and add on calculators. The reading lessons this week focus on scientists.  The boys and girls will read books about scientists and become scientists as they explore states of matter and conduct experiments.  They will also classify and categorize science words, blend phonemes, identify the middle sound in words and recall story details. The full day students will study the books Tacky the Penguin  by Helen Lester and The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.  They will focus on key ideas and recalling details, new vocabulary and connecting ideas from the story to their lives.  They will play rhyming games, Snowy Day Vowel scoot, and Mitten Addition.
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
This week , we learned about Jesus's baptism and celebrated our own.  Then we learned about the calling of Jesus's disciples.  The pirates invaded our room this week in spelling.  All of our spelling words had them /ar/ sound, so we made some pirates to help us practice our words.  Friday the children presented a story to the kindergarten class. They did such a nice job!  Science experiments are taking place in our room.  One student is testing which cheese molds fastest while another is finding out if all chips have the same amount of grease.  Children have been smelling bags of mysterious content and flying paper airplanes.  We finally started the writing of our winter stories.  The weather has been very cooperative in helping us come up with ideas.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
This week in second grade we are finishing up our reading chapter on school and beginning our next chapter which includes the story of Helen Keller.  For grammar we are focusing on using quotations marks while working with the long i sound on our spelling list.  Meanwhile, in science we are going to be experimenting with Hot Wheels and determining how mass may affect speed. Seventh and eighth graders played the online quiz games they created and then had a test over Chapter 2 which dealt with technology and the Space Race.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
In religion we continued to study one of Jesus' parables.  This week is  we did the parable of the great banquet.  In our book, Riding Freedom, our main character continued to pose as a boy and took a new job.  Adverbs are what we studied in grammar.  Nebraska and Kansas are the states we learned about in social studies.  In science, we continued learning about the solar system.  In math, the 3rd graders worked with symmetry, congruence, line segments, decimals, and polyhedrons....a busy week!   The 4th graders learned how to use a protractor and worked with coordinate grids.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week, we studied the monuments built in the Old Testament and the Fall of Jericho. In 5th grade math, we worked with adding and subtracting negative numbers.  In 6th grade math, we enjoyed our 11th test, worked with geometric solids, adding and subtracting mixed numbers and fractions. In our Language Arts time we completed a persuasive writing on school uniforms. We also held a debate over the topic of school uniforms. In Social Studies we continued our study on the effect of history on the U.S. and Canada. In Science, we looked at the use of changes in wildlife communities. We also looked at what makes a good Science Fair board. In Spelling, we had a review week of lessons 13-17.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
This week we've finally finished To Kill a Mockingbird.  I think the students at least understand why it is many people's favorite book.  In History, we're studying the making of the Constitution.  It's the oldest such document on Earth that's still in operation.  We're learning of the compromises made in the interest in agreeing to make a country in which everyone had the right to happiness.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are preparing for our chapel presentation that was postponed from last week’s snow problems.  In 7th grade math the students are calculating implied ratios and multiplying and dividing integers.  In 8th grade math we are using multiple unit multipliers to convert rates and simplifying square roots.  The students are making a tire for raining conditions in STEM.
