Thoughts
There is always time for a story.  Want to spend time with your youngster, build their reading skills, and help them learn to love books?  You can do all three when you read aloud to them.  Here are some suggestions:
Read regularly – Try to read to your child every day.  You might aim for 10-15 minutes of bedtime reading for a peaceful end to the day.  If that doesn’t work, why not read while you are waiting for another child’s athletic practice to finish.
Take turns choosing books - Since most younger children tend to want to read the same book over and over, use your turn for new titles and variety.
Let them participate – Ask your child to turn the pages while you read.  Also, they could finish a sentence.
Be playful – You can use different voices for different characters.  Try substituting your child’s name for the main character in the book.  Use other family names for other characters.

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
Preschool is studying letter D for Dr. Seuss! It is his birthday on March 2, so we will spend the week reading his books! Threes will read The Cat in the Hat and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. They will create their own hats and fish artwork. Fours will read The Cat in the Hat, The Foot Book, and Marvin K. Mooney. They will learn about opposites and create their own oobleck. In Bible Time both classes will journey to the cross starting with Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem on what we now celebrate as Palm Sunday.
Mrs. Reynolds (PK & P-2)
Pre-k is learning about the letter J this week as we dive into the story of Jack and the beanstalk. We will be looking at a few different versions of the story and comparing how the details differ in each story. We will also be revisiting the story of David and Goliath and comparing it to our Jack and the beanstalk story. How did David face his giant and beat him? We have a giant on the wall in our room to get us a visual of how big Goliath was and we will practice throwing beanbags at him pretending to be David. We are using giant sized feet to measure various things through-out the classroom and planting some beans of our own. Pre-2 is learning about Jonah and the big fish and what God had planned for Jonah. Mrs. Schulte is teaching this week as Mrs. Reynolds will be at an educational class. She has planned a cute activity for the students to make their own fish bottles. The letter the students are looking at this week is Q they will be making queens out of the letter.
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Jesus healing the 10 lepers is the Bible lesson for the week. During reading, the class will read fictional stories about scientific discoveries. They will use verbs in past, present and future tense, identify synonyms, review sight words, and retell the beginning, middle and end of a story. The boys and girls continue to explore measurement in math.  Kindergarten will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with crazy sock day on Wednesday. The full day students will complete a book study of The Three Billy Goats Fluff.  They will also rotate through literacy and math centers.
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
This week our lessons in Jesus Time taught us about Zacchaeus and Jesus' ride into Jerusalem.  In math, the children wrapped up a unit on geometry.  They enjoyed playing "What's My Shape."  We did some cross over learning in math and language arts when we used quotation marks to make shapes talk.  Several of our winter stories are finished and ready for publishing.  These kids have some stories they should be very proud to share.  In science, we are working on finishing up our unit on living and non-living things.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
Second graders are learning about Jackie Robinson and perseverance in our stories for reading this week.  We also learned about Piet Mondrian and created some of our own artwork to mirror his style of abstract art; as a bonus we watched the art museum episode of Arthur where his painting is hung sideways. The second grade is also learning about light energy through our Science 4 Us program while they are dealing with fractions in math.  In social studies we are learning about goods and services and refining our map reading skills.  Seventh and Eighth graders are learning about constellations and types of galaxies.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
We continued our Lenten story in religion with the account of Jesus being taken and Peter being tested.  Along with the account, we discussed repentance and forgiveness.  We began a new book in reading, Snow Treasure, a story about the Nazi invasion and how Norwegian children helped to smuggle their nation's gold past the soldiers in order to send it to America.  In social studies we learned about Louisiana and Arkansas.  Ecosystems was the topic in science this week.  In math the 3rd graders began the week with a chapter test and ended it by beginning a chapter in fractions.  The 4th graders continued their study of fractions - comparing them and changing them into decimals.  We also had fun with our pre-K chapel buddies, helping to paint a Lenten mural, and got to pick our Iditarod musher that we will follow next week.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we studied Israel’s first kings. In 5th grade math we worked with coordinates and area.  In 6th grade math we took our 14th test as well as did more complex work with fractions. In our Language Arts time we began reading Which Way Freedom? In Social Studies we began power points on Central America. In Science we studied where living things live on the Earth. In Spelling we worked through Unit 23 on words beginning with over- and under-.
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
In History, we’re learning about the precedents set by our first president, George Washington.  He could have been king, or ruler for life.  He chose two  4- year terms.  He was asked how much he wanted to be paid.  He wanted nothing, but others convinced him it would set a bad precedent in the future, so he took $1 per year.  I wonder if we could convince ANY public official to take less salary for the good of the people.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are discussing divorce and God’s plan for marriages.  In 7th grade math the students are multiplying algebraic terms and using multiple unit multipliers to convert measures.  In 8th grade math we are finding the volume of pyramids and cones and studying scale drawings.  The students are building a bird feeder in STEM.
