Notes
Five weeks ago a visitation team for accreditation was at St. Mark’s for 3 days.  Here are some of their suggestions for improvement (not in any particular order):
ü  Perform an annual financial audit.
ü  .  Use volunteers or paid staff to provide more support if needed.
ü  At the start of each school year, a formal school professional development plan should be adopted.
ü  Research free and paid membership to professional organization for every teacher
ü  Adopt a formal salary scale to determine where each staff member falls in comparison to district guidelines
ü  Adopt a formal plan to have all curriculum maps completed by next NLSA visit
ü  Find ways for teachers to intentionally collaborate with one another pertaining to lessons, student achievement, technology.
ü  Plans for specific training (CPR, blood born pathogen, first-aid,etc.) need to be incorporated in your school staff development plan.
ü  Develop a plan to perform annual background checks for volunteers.
ü  Secure the church entrance.
Important Dates to Know
2-6  Achievement  testing
6-7 Math Camp (grades 1-6)
Math Camp
Math Camp begins Friday after school.  Please bring your tents to school with instructions in the morning.  Tent pitching begins at 4:00.  All participants help with this process.  This is a learning process for children.   In the event of severe weather or predicted severe weather for the night time hours, tents will not be set up as no one will be spending the night.  Parents who volunteered to help with set up need to be present at 2:30.  Report to the teacher work room for instructions.  It shouldn't take long.   If possible, please do not pull your child for a few hours to go to a sport practice.  The children have strategically been placed on a math team.  There teammates will be counting on them.  I'm sure the weather will be grand, and everyone will have a fabulous time.
New Box Top$ leader!!!
Now we have grades 5 & 6 in the lead with more than 10 Box Top$ per student. Kindergarten is in second with 5 Box Top$ per student. Grades 3 & 4 are close behind with 4.6 Box Top$ per student. Keep collecting and remember the contest ends May 18, 2016.
Judi and Gil Schepmann, coordinators
Tuition for May
All tuition payments must be paid by May 10.  Students will not be allowed to attend after May 10 unless payment in full has been made.  8th graders will not be allowed to attend graduation unless tuition is paid in full.  This does not apply to those families on auto-deduct.
Achievement Testing
St. Mark’s will not be taking the PARCC like last year.  The students in grades 1-8 are taking the Terra Nova achievement tests this week. This is an updated test similar to the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.  Parents will receive a summary copy when the results are known.
Yearbooks for Sale
Yearbooks for 15-16 are on sale for $12 each.  You will have at least 48 color pages of wonderful and memorable pictures.  To order send a check made to St. Mark’s.  Since we are using a different company this year, no special options are available (like name on front, personal note, etc.).  Order forms have been distributed and are also available in the hallway.
Yearbook ad and love-lines
Love lines for the yearbook can be reserved using the form being sent home.  Also, ads for the yearbook are available.  See the office.
Yearbook pictures needed
Any and all pictures for the yearbook can be sent to stmarksmilfordphotos@gmail.com

Classroom information
Mrs. Frey (P-3 & P-4)
Preschool is reviewing letter M for Mom! We will discuss what makes a Mom special and create special Mother’s Day presents. We will read “Are You My Mother?” and talk about the jobs that animal mothers have. Both classes will end the week with a special celebration to honor their Mothers and Grandmothers. In Bible Time 3’s will learn about how God cares for all creatures great and small. 4’s will hear the account of Phillip spreading the Gospel to an Ethiopian man. It is our job as well to tell others about God’s love!
Mrs. Reynolds (PK & P-2)
This week Pre-K is preparing for our mother's day party on Thursday and making gifts for our moms. Our classroom butterflies have all come out of their chrysalis and we will be observing them and letting them free this week. We are reviewing alphabet letters and their sounds this week. Our Bible story for the week is the story of Phillip.  Pre-2 is working with the theme of "Under the Sea" we will be reading books on sea life and reading the story of "Shipwrecked" from our Bible book about the storm that Jesus calmed when He and His disciples were on a boat. We will also practice our fishing skills in our water table and working on the alphabet letter Z for zebra.
Mrs. Sherman (K)
Kindergarten's rainforest adventure continues as they read and write about animals that live in the different layers of the rainforest. They will create howler monkeys and blue morpho butterflies to add to the class rainforest.  At Bible time, the class will learn how God promises to be with us during difficult times as they listen to the account of Paul being shipwrecked.  During math, the class will tell time, add and subtract.  The full day students will measure, count money, clap syllables and more as they rotate through rainforest themed math and literacy centers.  They will also learn interesting facts about sloths!
Mrs. Reisenbichler (1)
This week we continued our study of the parables of Jesus.  One of our favorites was what I like to call the Parable of the Forgiving Father.  Testing went well and wasn’t very long.  The children spent larger amounts of time this week writing their science based story.  I am very pleased with the good writers the grace our room.  In math we reviewed math concepts learned earlier.
Ms. Rhonemus (2)
This week the second graders have been working hard while taking the Terra Nova test.  In addition to testing they have been continuing to work with money and area in math as well as learning how to build a kite as part of our reading curriculum.  We read a story about how two children become friends and build a kite together so then the class worked on building a kite while following the directions in the book.  We also continuing to watch our tadpoles grow and it seems as though one of them has a full set of back legs now which is very exciting.  Seventh and eighth graders are now learning about work and simple machines.
Mrs. Mayo (3-4)
Most of the mornings this week were spent taking achievement tests. We looked forward to celebrating the end of the tests at Math Camp on Friday.  In religion we studied the account of Philip and the Ethiopian and discussed our call to also tell others about our Savior.  In social studies we learned about Utah and Nevada.  In science we shared our research on endangered species.  In math the 3rd graders explored arrays and equilateral triangles and worked on multiplying by 2 digits.  The 4th graders compared population data and multiplied decimals.
Mr. Postenrieder (5-6)
In our Bible time this week we finished our study of Solomon building the temple. We also looked at Rehoboam and Jeroboam. In 5th grade math we worked with capacity, weight, and surface area. We also reviewed for our Unit 11 test. In 6th grade math we worked on algebraic addition of integers. We also worked with compound experiments. The 19th pre-test was given Friday. In our Language Arts time we wrote an expository paper on our favorite game. In Social Studies we continued to study South America. The kids were assigned a country to present a power point. In Science we continued our look at “Living Resources.” We continued to monitor our bluebird houses. We also planted flowers in the small bed by the school entrance. There was no spelling this week as we also took our standardized tests for this year!
Mr. Mayo (7,8)
In Literature this week, we’ll be looking at the media’s attempt to control our behavior.  Whether they’re selling something or telling us not to text while driving, they ARE trying to control our behavior, sometimes for our own good.  We’re trying to determine some effective ways to do that.  We are also administering Achievement Tests this week, in the mornings.
Mr. Reisenbichler (7-8)
In religion we are discussing addictions.  In 7th grade math the students are solving equations with exponents and compound interest problems.  In 8th grade math, the class is calculating consumer interest and converting repeating decimals to fractions.  The students are constructing a key ring using a CAD program on the computer and them printing it on a 3D printer in STEM.
